Six Tips For New Year Fitness Success

New Year Resolutions - Most of us make them and most of us break them! It's easy to promise over-ambitious improvements aimed at changing your life, but it takes determination and a few tricks to stop the cycle of resolving to make changes and then not following through. If your resolution is to take better care of yourself and to get fitter in 2017, here are my top six tips to help you increase your chances of lasting success.
1. Set Realistic Goals.
Saying that you "want to lose weight" or "improve my body shape" is great, but be SPECIFIC and REALISTIC so that you don't fall at the first hurdle. Instead of pledging to lose weight, set an exact figure that you can achieve. For example, "I'm going to lose 5kg over the first 5 months of 2017." This way you can break it down and track your progress. "I'll lose 1kg each month". When goals are realistic and easy to track, you're much more likely to achieve them.
2. Plan Ahead.
Write things down now. How much weight will you need to lose each week to reach your goal? Half a kilo? One kilo? If you know exactly what to expect of yourself you can prevent unachievable goals being missed, and it will help to keep your motivation high. Reaching your weekly target will fire your enthusiasm to keep going.
3. Talk About It.
Having the support of your friends and family increases your chances of reaching your goals. Tell them what you are trying to achieve and ask them to help you by supporting you. Use your social media profiles to seek support from followers, and get advice from those who are trying to achieve similar goals to you. Follow my Twitter page for hints and tips.
4. Track Your Progress.
There are lots of resources available to help you track your progress. My own 'Colin Dobson Fitness' app is excellent for tracking diet and exercise. Download it for free on iOS or Android. Use it to monitor how you're doing. Try to add a little bit more to each activity. Go faster, further or higher. Whatever it takes to do better then the previous activity. You'll feel the improvements within the first week!
5. Don't Always Believe Your Scales.
Your body weight mainly comprises fat, muscle, tissue, bone and water. Your bathroom scales don't know the difference between them. Muscle weighs significantly more than fat, so if you exercise regularly, it's likely that you may gain muscle and lose body fat without the scales telling you this. The best way to see a change is to use body measurements, or better still, look in your mirror and feel the change in the way your clothes fit.
6. Don't Give Up!
Most people who try to lose weight give up within the first few weeks. If you feel like giving in, or you gave in to temptation and feasted out, fearing that you've spoiled everything, don't despair! There's a golden rule... Be good 80% of the time. You're allowed to treat yourself. In fact people who occasionally indulge in the things they enjoy stay motivated for longer than those who cut out everything they like. There are lots of ways to keep your motivation going.
